SUI-64 : a Spanish heritage?

Alinghi

Alinghi's America's Cup winner, SUI-64, came from the board of Principal Designer Rolf Vrolijk. Both Vrolijk and Manuel Ruiz de Elvira designed for the Spanish Challenge Bravo España before joining the Swiss syndicate. Although the Spanish team was eliminated from the Louis Vuitton series before the semi-finals, their ESP-47 was widely thought to be one of the faster hulls of the 2000 class. A pair of images from Nico Martinez and Thierry Martinez / Alinghi Team are placed side by side below for comparison.

A casual analysis yields these observations: SUI-64 has similar lines forward when compared to ESP-47. Like her elder cousin, SUI-64 sports an up-turned nose but with a more refined sheer line compared to the abrupt angular departure of the prior boat. Combining the raised stem profile with knuckle bow effectively cuts off the long stem and transitions in a fine long triangular shape. Though the focus here is on bows, note how the photo shows the quest to minimize beam resulting in full, almost hard-chined, slab sides.
