Announced as an official challenger March 23, 2005.
Major sponsor Italian
banking firm Capitalia. The team is again representing Real YC Canottieri
Savoia. Their official announcement included the news that they had
acquired the two Stars & Stripes boats, USA-66 and USA-77, from Team Dennis
Conner. Mascalzone has modified those boats to meet version 5 of the ACC
rule and will be racing USA-77 at all of the 2005 Louis Vuitton Acts.
Owner Vincenzo Onorato said
in 2003 that the Latin Rascals will return for 2007,
this time aiming to win.
"...I am convinced that our country is ready and mature enough now to win the
America's Cup." --- Vincenzo Onorato
At the end of the 2005
Louis Vuitton Acts the team released Hamish Pepper, as well as Tom Weaver
(Team Manager).
Older history:
Announced June 12th, 2004, that Vasco Vascotto and Flavio
Favini will return to lead the afterguard. Some notable departures rumored,
including Paolo Cian. Italy's
La Gazetta dello Sport,
April, 2004, said that John Cutler was moving from K-Challenge to sign with
Mascalzone. Reports in the Spanish press in July
2004 hinted at an arrangement
involving Spain's Pedro Campos combining efforts with Mascalzone and some form of sponsorship from Spanish sources.
A statement published in Scuttlebutt #1640, August 5, 2004, said that an
agreement between Campos and Mascalzone Latino had not been yet been reached,
but still kept alive the possibility of a "Mas Latino" extra-national team. Mascalzone was reportedly represented at the April, 2004,
challenger meetings by Tom Weaver, John Cutler, and Vasco Vascotto.
Boats:
ITA-66
Originally USA-66 (Stars&Stripes - Team Dennis Conner). Built
2002 New England Boatworks, designed by Reichel-Pugh. Reverse-angle
"canoe bow". Modified by MLCT to v5 and used in training against ITA-77.
ITA-77
Originally USA-77 (Stars&Stripes - Team Dennis Conner). Built
2002 New England Boatworks, designed by Reichel-Pugh. Reverse-angle
"canoe bow". Sank during training off Long Beach, CA, July 2002.
Modified by MLCT to v5 and raced in 2005 Louis Vuitton Acts.
Other boats:
MLCT is
the last reported owner of two earlier ACC's: ITA-55 (the former
Stars&Stripes boat from 2000, via OneWorld) and ITA-47 (the former Bravo
Espana boat from 2000).
Mascalzone Latino's 2003 boat, ITA-72, is now UITG's GER-72.
